MEET: THE ‘BEYOND’ TRILOGY AUTHOR:
J. Winfield Currie
I was raised on Homestead Farm, a small working dairy farm in Southeastern Massachusetts owned by my grandmother and built on 40 acres of gently rolling fields, surrounded by pristine woodlands and a large swamp filled with graceful cat o’ nine tails.
My father was a talented taxidermist who spent long hours in his shop working on animals brought in by local hunters: deer, pheasants, fish, etc. As we worked, he took the time to explain every tool used and how to add a spark of life to each ‘mount’. Dad truly had the patience of Jobe, and I learned many ‘tricks of the trade’.
After graduating from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston with a B.F.A. in Advertising Design, I set up a part-time art studio for freelance design work and painting fantasy watercolors to display at local art shows. In 1992 I enjoyed showing my work at King Richard’s Faire in Carver, Massachusetts.
Retail hardware entered my life in the mid-1970s, an interesting career I stayed with for about 29 years. Few women, if any, worked in hardware back then. But for me, it was perfect. I had always wanted to understand equipment repairs back on the farm.
Looking back, the hours I spent sitting under the oak trees and writing short stories on the farm’s side lawn were definitely not a waste of time. I have come full circle with my novels and am presently working on more.
